How the Phone card industry grew so quickly

Sunday 9 July 2006 @ 1:32 am

What is all this fuss about calling cards?? Why has the industry experienced such extraordinary growth?

The phone card industry’s exponential growth is a direct result of the consumers need for cheap and convenient communications services. Pre-paid calling cards and monthly billed calling cards often offer considerably lower long distance rates than the more traditional phone services such as coin, cellular and collect calling. Additionally pre-paid phone card rates remain constant no matter what time or day the call is placed. Pre-paid cards were introduced in the U.S. in the early 90′s and the large phone companies used traditional channels to market their cards to their customers. Until 1996 the phone companies made no significant effort to sell their cards as they already had a thoroughly established and entrenched profitable market. New products and concepts were also hard to sell to a public who already had a system that worked.

Tips On Using PrePaid calling cards

Compare
There are a lot of prepaid calling cards out there and there are some major differences between the fees they charge. If you’re serious about getting the most out of your hard earned dollar, take the time to compare different phone cards.

always read the small print on the term and conditions.
Be aware of why prepaid calling cards are so profitable for long distance carriers: Let’s say you purchase a prepaid calling card for $50 and this card has an extremely low per minute rate but a $1 connection fee for each call. You make your calls until you have $0.90 worth of minutes on the card. Guess what? You can’t use the card anymore because the connection fee is $1. All you can do is throw the card away, and the company that issued the card just made a free $0.90.

Prepaid Phone Cards Industry

Saturday 8 July 2006 @ 7:39 pm

The vending industry is feeling the continuing effects of the decline of cigarette sales.  This sizeable chunk of the vending revenue needs a replacement and needs it now.
The replacement is here: prepaid phone cards.

The prepaid phone card is actually very similar to cigarettes in the way they are handled by vending operators.  Cigarettes usually are sold through dedicated machines on specialized routes, because the need for high security and the disparity in price between them and other vended merchandise tends to make them an imperfect fit as part of a broader product mix.  There were also federal and state regulations that have to be followed for cigarettes and not for other vended products.

How to Choose Phone Card?

Thursday 6 July 2006 @ 7:22 pm

Here are some criteria that you should look at when buying a phone card:

Possible hidden charges
Make sure that you understand the following hidden charges, and always check whether they apply to your calling card:

-Connection Fees: As long as your call is connected you will be charged, regardless of whether your call is picked up. So, repeated phone calls to the same telephone number, even if they aren’t picked up, will cost you the connection fee. Theoretically, cards with connection fees are cheaper if you tend to make lengthy calls. Unfortunately, some companies may intentionally disconnect the line so that they can charge you the connection fee again.

-Surcharges: A surcharge is an additional charge on top of the usual charge for a service, imposed for a specified reason.

-Service Fees: Some phone card companies charge a fixed weekly or monthly service fee on top of the per-minute rate.

-Incremental Rates: Say you have two cards, A and B, both with rate of 10 cents per minute. Card A charges you each minute, and card B charges you every three minutes. When you make a 1 minute phone call, card A charges $0.10, but card B charges $0.30! This is perfectly legal, so watch out for it. Continue Reading »
